Reversible Bralette

Using the Waves and Wild Superstar Bra as a base (although you could apply this method to many patterns) I'll show you how to make the bra reversible so it can be worn inside out; two style choices for one make.

Lets get started.

Cut out the pattern pieces listed on page 6 PLUS an extra waistband. this tutorial does NOT work with an elastic band BUT you can add wide, non-roll, elastic inside your band for additional support if required. You want each pattern piece in both the lining and main fabric. You should have:

  • Four 'front', one left, one right, in each fabric.

  • Two 'back', one in each fabric

  • Two underbust bands, one in each fabric

  • (Optional) clear elastic to reinforce seams

Follow instructions for the main construction up to step 19 then STOP before you touch the underbust band.

Take your two underbust band pieces and sew them right sides together along one long edge. If your fabric is directional, you want to sew along the bottom edge(s).

Press (optional)

This will now be treated as one underbust band. Take this band and fold it in half, right sides together, matching the short sides. Sew. You should now have a tube. DO NOT FOLD IN HALF as per the instructions.

Take your bra, basted, as per step 12, and put the band over the bra, right sides facing. the matching patterns need to be aligned at the bottom, There should be three raw edges. In my example, the bra is floral side out, therefore the floral half of the band, is over the bra, lined up, with raw edges matching, the geometric half of the band, is higher up (we are not currently interested in this). Pin, and sew, ensuring that the band is equally stretched all the way around (see steps 21/22 if you need help with this, just remember NOT TO FOLD IT IN HALF yet).

Press your seam allowance down (towards the band) and the bottom of your unnatached waistband piece up 6-10mm

Fold your band in half along the seam where the two designs are attached. Pin your pressed seam OVER the seam allowance. You may find it useful to use washaway zip tape to do this, but it doesn't stretch, and your underbust band will need to stretch to fit, so be cautious if you decide to do this.

Carefully, using a wide, three step zig zag, topstitch all the way around the bra band, attaching the second layer of the underbust band. Ensure all layers are attached, and that it is evenly stretched throughout.

Voila! You have a reversible bra!!!
