Vinyl is a fantastic fa
bric because it doesn't fray and retains great structure. However it can be quite tricky to sew. My Brother machine flat out refuses to sew with it, but my workshop Necchi machines are okay and my vintage Singer is a whizz. Have a play with scraps and don't be disheartened if your machine struggles.
Cut three rectangles, 8" by 5" (if you're good with small seam allowances you could go for 7.5" by 4.5").
Fold each rectangle in half, wrong sides together, along the 5" side, to give you three rectangles measuring 8" by 2.5". Do not iron the vinyl but press the fold well with your fingers.
Optional,: Lay under a heavy book overnight to crease.
Slot one rectangle inside a second, allowing 5/8th of an inch between the two bottom seams. Repeat for the third rectangle.
It is more important that it looks evenly distributed, than it measures exact.
Use clips to hold in place.
Carefully sew along the two sides. Repeat twice if desired, or back tack (reverse stitch) well to secure the seams. Sew along the middle.
Optional: Sew along the bottom.
Trim edges to neaten.
Ta daaaah! What a beautiful wallet!! I personally plan on using mine for loyalty cards!
Options:
You can make one half size, by cutting three rectangles at 4" by 5".
You can make one using directional fabric using six rectangles (not three) at 8" by 2.5".
You can make one with only two layers, not three.
