Ever wanted to make a teething toy? They are super simple, quick, and a great scrap busting project!
Materials Required
Scrap fabric (two of 4" x 18")
Standard sewing machine
Fabric Choices
Ideally you want a fabric with some texture, to soothe sore gums from teething. You could use an old towel, some terry towelling, bamboo towelling, french terry, cotton lycra, squish, an old blanket, canvas, or cotton. It doesn't really matter what you choose, for each ring you need two separate scraps, and you are welcome to mix and match fabric type, thickness and texture. Here I have paired squish with french terry, and a double layer of cotton lycra.
Take your two rectangles, curve the corners, and clip right sides together. mark the centre 2" of one long side with a pen, or by adding a set of double pins.
With the least stretchy fabric on top, sew from one marker, all the way around the perimeter, to the other marker. Sew using a 1cm seam allowance. Ensure you back tack (this is the art of securing your seams by reversing over the first few stitches) at the start and end of your sewing.
Using sharp scissors, cut into the seam allowance around the curves. Turn the whole thing through the hole you left in the previous step. Depending on what fabric you used, you may choose to press (iron) at this stage.
Tuck the raw edges inside, in the 2" gap, and hand sew closed.
Fold your rectangle following the diagrams below, and thread into the teething ring; pull to tighten and flatten out.
VOILA - one completed teething ring!
